2 Guides in Scotland to allow maximum flexibility for activities and cater to the differing priorities and interests of the group (as well as plenty of space for passengers and luggage in the vehicles)

Day by Day

Day 1 - Thursday 27th June - Welcome To Scotland, Meet Your Guides & Explore Culloden Battlefield

On arrival in Inverness Airport you will be met by your private Guides, who will also act as your drivers for your time together. Take a light lunch and then immerse yourselves into some key Scottish history right away as you explore atmospheric Culloden Battlefield. This site of the last battle of the Jacobite rising in 1746 was a key turning point in Scottish history.

You may also wish to visit the nearby site of three Bronze Age burial chambers and standing stones known as Clava Cairns. This site is exceptionally well preserved and a great example of prehistoric history in Scotland dating back over 4,000 years. Then head into Inverness to your welcoming hotel.

This evening enjoy dinner hosted by both of your guides, giving you a chance to discuss the plans for your Scottish explorations in the days ahead.

NOTE – The request for family history chat before dinner is noted. However additional family details would be much appreciated (and really needed) to allow for prior research.

Today you head to the mountain town of Aviemore and have a full day of hiking with your qualified hiking guides in the Cairngorm National Park. There are many different options to choose from and your guides will advise you on the best choices based on the weather and what you want to explore. This mountain range boasts 5 out of 6 of the highest peaks in the UK, so you can choose if you want to head up onto the peaks or stay lower down in the romantic Caledonian pine forests and glens. Your guides will discuss the best options to suit your energy levels, the weather and your preferred level of challenge!

At the end of the day you transfer over  the ‘snow roads’ to your unique hotel in the charming village of Braemar.

Day 3 - Saturday 29th June - Unique Foodie Workshop in the Whisky Hills

Set out into the whisky hills to a private remote kitchen this morning and spend a fascinating day in the home and kitchen of the charismatic writer, broadcaster and ‘food anthropologist’ Ghillie Basan. Set in an idyllic location you will discover a colourful and well stocked kitchen with inspiring views over the local hills. Ghillie will guide you in cooking a delicious feast (including local ingredients foraged from the surrounding hills) while you share stories and learn about the dishes you are creating.

Your guides will take you back to Braemar this afternoon. Depending on the time, you may also choose to hike more with your guides.

Note: Hiking over the hills into the location of the foodie workshop is possible today. Your guides will discuss the options with you and together you will decide on the best option for the day, taking into account the weather, energy levels and your preferred level of challenge. You can split into 2 groups, as both of your guides are qualified hiking guides. Please note that these are NOT marked trails and are rough underfoot.

Day 4 - Sunday 30th June - To the Kingdom of Fife

Leave the mountains of the Cairngorms behind and head to the windswept coast of the Kingdom of Fife – the home of your ancestors. The keen golfers will arrive in time to enjoy an afternoon round on a classic links course (on the same coastline as the ‘birthplace of golf’), with one of your party joining as an observer.

For the rest of the party, you have all kinds of options to explore the local area with your guides. Perhaps explore part of the Fife Coastal Trail with your guide, along the “Fringe Of Gold”, as the Fife beaches are known, and through traditional villages which are built around tiny fishing harbours. These are all wonderfully picturesque with wee stone houses keeping watch over the brightly painted fishing vessels in the harbours, so make sure that you have your camera handy!. At the end of the day when you all meet back up you will have great tales to share.

NOTE – The interest in Balgrove Larder is noted but it does not take reservations (in the day cafe or the Steak Barn). There is the option to visit on route to golf if you wish. This could be a good place for the golfers to grab a quick bite before their round. Your guides will discuss this with you.

Day 6 - Tuesday 2nd July - Rosslyn Chapel & The Scottish Borders

This morning you head to the enigma that is Rosslyn Chapel, made even more famous by the book ‘The Da Vinci Code’. Dan Brown called this chapel “the most mysterious and magical chapel on earth” and there are certainly lots of unanswered questions about this unique building. Originally founded in 1446, the chapel features intricate carvings and decorations which have prompted many different theories connected with the Knights Templar and the Freemasons amongst others.

Then your guides will take you south into the lush Scottish Borders, to Galashiels. This mill town has many historic links with the textile and fashion world, making it the perfect location to home The Great Tapestry Of Scotland. At 143 metres long, this hand stitched tapestry depicts the story of Scotland and is one of the biggest community arts projects in the world. Then soak in the inspiration of nearby Abbotsford House, the beautiful home of Sir Walter Scott, or visit the elegant ruins of Melrose Abbey. There are also some lovely gentle scenic walks in the area if you would prefer.

Your guides will take you back to your hotel and then depart, leaving you to enjoy your last evening in Scotland.

Notes On Weather & Flexibility

Weather in Scotland can be very changeable. Suitable clothing and footwear is essential, as well as a flexible attitude. Plans may have to be changed to accommodate Mother Nature, and your guide will have back-up plans that they will discuss with you if required.

Essential Packing List

  • Waterproof jacket with hood
  • Waterproof over-pants
  • Sturdy hiking boots/shoes (sneakers or tennis shoes are not suitable for any hiking in Scotland)
  • Day pack 20-30 litre for carrying water and extra layers
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Warm layers
  • Warm hat, gloves and a neck gaiter
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Smart casual attire for dinners

Note: If you would like us to provide trekking poles for your use then please just let us know and we will ensure these are available for you.

Luggage Notes

Please note that we expect travellers to bring an average of One Large Holdall or Suitcase and up to Two smaller day-bags or hand-luggage sized pieces. If you expect to bring more than this then please let us know well in advance of arrival so that we can ensure there is capacity for this (additional charges will apply if separate luggage transfers are required).

Useful Contacts

24 hour in-country support (Wilderness Scotland):  +44 (0)1479 420 020, or out with regular office hours +44 (0)7766 794 640 (urgent calls only)

Emergency services:  999 or 112NHS 24 (24 hour free medical advice):  111

Tipping Guidelines

For tipping our guides – We don’t generally recommend a set amount as tipping is not expected in the same way that it is in North America. However, similar North American travel companies generally suggest something along the lines of £10-30 per person per day for your guide, which is a wide range to choose from. Generally, we would encourage you to ask yourself what you were expecting from your guide, and then think about how they have exceeded those expectations and choose an amount you are comfortable with.

For local services such as restaurants again tipping is not expected but if you receive great service then 10-15% of the bill is normal.

Craig McDonald

Contact Number: +44 (0)7738 665 418

Knowledgeable | Passionate | Humorous

Although hailing from the Central Belt my passion and love for Scottish History was destined to draw me to my ancestral homelands. This passion led to a deep love for the Scottish mountains and Glens, and so I embarked on a career working in this stunning environment.

I love hillwalking, mountaineering and biking all over Scotland, all year round. My passion for exploring the history of these areas is infectious and I love sharing these experiences with other people.

My idea of heaven is a cracking long day on foot or on a bike exploring Scotland’s stunning scenery and history, followed by a good hearty dinner and some mirth and laughter by a roaring fire with a wee dram in the evening.

Place to Play

A tough question to answer – but probably Ardnamurchan. It is wild feeling and very peaceful, offering stunning peaks, glorious coastline and untrampled miles of heather-clad goodness! And of course being a McDonald means I am close to where it all began…

Not a lot of people know this

I am hugely interested in paranormal activity – I was even a member of the Ghost Club (started by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself) for a few years before moving to Fort William to be closer to the mountains. I started out as a sceptic but several experiences may have changed my mind!

Cheery | Optimistic | Daft

After many years in the hospitality industry, I became a Senior Event Coordinator for a large hotel and leisure resort in Perthshire where I coordinated a huge variety of conferences, weddings and special occasions.  On the year of my 30th birthday, I decided to take some time out of work to chill out for a few months and so I bought myself a little camper van.  In the summer of 2014, me and my trusty Turbo Alick spent over 3 months exploring the stunning landscapes of the North West Coast, Skye and the Outer Hebrides.

Place to Play

It has to be Glenshee which was on my doorstep growing up.  My family still live in the area so I love going home to enjoy Glenshee’s mountains, peaceful glens, lochs, forest tracks and of course the ski centre.  Gleann Taitneach in particular has been one of my favourite places to go ever since I was a little girl when we used to go swimming in the ‘secret’ pools.

Not a lot of people know this

I used to be really shy (apparently not so much anymore!)
