Day by Day

Day 1 - Wednesday 15th July - Blair Castle & the Woodlands of Atholl

Today, your guide will pick you up at your hotel in Edinburgh and together you will start your journey into the Highlands. Your journey begins in Highland Perthshire with a visit to the magnificent Blair Castle, one of Scotland’s most significant historic houses. Dating back to the 13th century, the castle has witnessed centuries of Scottish history and offers a fascinating introduction to the region’s heritage. After exploring the elegant interiors and impressive collections, set out on a scenic walk through the surrounding estate. The route follows peaceful woodland paths through a steep-sided glen, where mature trees and tumbling burns create a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere. With only modest elevation gain, the walk provides a relaxed introduction to the landscapes of the Highlands. As the trail returns to the castle grounds, there is time to further appreciate the estate’s beautiful setting. The combination of history, nature and gentle walking provides the perfect start to your adventure.

Day 2 - Thursday 16th July - Glenmore Forest & the Green Lochan

Today’s invigorating circular walk explores the beautiful landscapes surrounding Glenmore in the northern Cairngorms. Beginning amongst ancient Caledonian pine forests, the route follows a high-level trail that gradually reveals sweeping views across the surrounding mountains and glens. A highlight of the day is reaching An Lochan Uaine, known as the Green Lochan, whose distinctive waters have inspired local legends for generations. On the return from your walk, stop at the Rothiemurchus Estate. This privately managed estate has a long history of conservation, farming and Highland tradition, offering a fascinating glimpse into life in this unique environment. A visit to the Rothiemurchus Barn provides an opportunity to browse locally made produce, Highland crafts and thoughtful souvenirs, with time to enjoy a relaxed break in a beautifully restored rural setting. It is an ideal place to pause before returning to your hotel to unwind after a rewarding day in the mountains.

Day 3 - Friday 17th July - The Wilderness of the Linn of Dee

Leaving the northern Cairngorms behind, continue deeper into the national park towards Royal Deeside. As the landscape changes from ancient pine forests to broad glens and heather-clad hills, discover a region long associated with Scottish royalty and Highland traditions. Widely regarded as one of the finest walks in Royal Deeside, today’s circular route explores a landscape of rivers, forests and mountain wilderness. Following well-maintained trails northwards, the walk gradually approaches the edge of the vast Cairngorm plateau, where some of Scotland’s highest peaks rise dramatically above deep glens. The scenery is both varied and striking, with ancient pinewoods giving way to expansive open vistas. Along the way, visit the famous Linn of Dee, where powerful waters have carved impressive rock formations through the centuries. Another highlight is the Devil’s Punchbowl, a dramatic natural feature that showcases the forces which shaped this rugged landscape. The combination of mountain views, rushing rivers and peaceful woodland makes this one of the most rewarding days of the journey.

Day 4 - Saturday 18th July - Loch Muick & Royal Lochnagar Distillery

This superb circular hike explores the beautiful landscapes of Glen Muick beneath the imposing presence of Lochnagar. The route leads through ancient pine forest, past one of Queen Victoria’s former hunting lodges and along the shores of the picturesque Loch Muick. Surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, the walk offers excellent opportunities to spot wildlife, including red deer and golden eagles. As the trail circles the loch, ever-changing views reveal why this area has long been cherished by visitors and royalty alike. After the walk, continue to the Royal Lochnagar Distillery for a tour and tasting experience. Granted a royal warrant by Queen Victoria in 1848, the distillery offers a fascinating insight into Scotland’s whisky-making traditions and royal connections. Sample a selection of exceptional single malts while learning about the craftsmanship and heritage behind one of Scotland’s most celebrated distilleries.

Day 5 - Sunday 19th July - Balmoral Estate & Return to Edinburgh

Your final morning is spent exploring the beautiful Balmoral Estate, the Highland residence of the Royal Family since it was purchased for Queen Victoria in 1852. Accompanied by your guide, choose from a range of walking routes tailored to the group’s interests and energy levels. Woodland trails, open moorland and gentle hill paths provide a fitting final experience of the landscapes that define Royal Deeside. As you walk through the estate, enjoy far-reaching views and a unique glimpse into one of Scotland’s most famous private estates. The combination of natural beauty and royal heritage provides an appropriate conclusion to your Highland adventure. After the walk, begin the journey south towards Edinburgh. En route, stop in South Queensferry to admire the remarkable trio of Forth bridges spanning the estuary, offering a memorable final view before your trip concludes.
