Overview

Walk the width of England coast to coast on this epic hiking trail. Journeying from the Irish Sea to the North Sea, the trail starts in the small town of St Bees and finishes in Robin Hood’s Bay. Walk the highlights of England’s Coast to Coast, you’ll pass through 3 national parks, covering a distance of over 100 miles. Hiking the most spectacular sections of Alfred Wainwright’s walk, you’ll follow in the footsteps of literary giants through the dramatic fells of the Lake District, the green rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales and the sweeping expanses of the North Yorks Moors National Park.

Led by an expert guide, you’ll discover on foot the area’s incredible history as you pass medieval castles, historic houses, storied monuments and ancient standing stones, with the scenery changing as you go. Relax each evening in handpicked accommodation and enjoy fresh local produce. The England Coast to Coast walk may be challenging, but it is also an incredibly rewarding hike showcasing Northern England’s scenery and heritage.

Day by Day

Day 1 - Tuesday 6th May - Arrival

Arrive in Penrith at the edge of the stunning Lake District, where you’ll meet Ben and Paul at Penrith Railway Station at 2pm. Transfer to the beautiful West Coast and settle into your cozy accommodation near Whitehaven for the next two nights. After a warm welcome briefing to discuss the exciting coast-to-coast adventure ahead, indulge in a delicious dinner and relax as you prepare for the journey of a lifetime.

Day 2 - Wednesday 7th May - St Bees to Whitehaven

Kick off your coast-to-coast adventure with a breathtaking walk from the iconic cliffs of St Bees to Ennerdale, covering approximately 14 miles. Shorter options are available if preferred. After a day of stunning coastal views and fresh air, return to the charming harbour town of Whitehaven. Enjoy a relaxing evening and a well-earned dinner as you reflect on the day’s accomplishments.

Day 3 - Thursday 8th May - Grasmere to Patterdale

After breakfast, transfer to the picturesque village of Grasmere, once home to poet William Wordsworth. Embark on a 9-mile hike to Patterdale, where stunning views of rolling hills and shimmering lakes will accompany you throughout the journey. After a rewarding day on the trails, settle into your accommodation in Glenridding.

Day 4 - Friday 9th May - Reeth to Richmond

Today, you’ll transfer to the charming village of Reeth and set off on a 10-mile hike through the rolling landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales. Along the way, take in stunning views of lush meadows, winding rivers, and traditional stone walls. Arrive in the historic town of Richmond, known for its medieval castle, Georgian architecture, and vibrant market square.

Day 5 - Saturday 10th May - Mount Grace Priory to Great Ayton

Begin your day exploring the beautiful gardens and atmospheric ruins of Mount Grace Priory, one of England’s best-preserved Carthusian monasteries. From here, embark on a scenic loop hike through the iconic Roseberry Topping, a striking hill with panoramic views, and visit Captain Cook’s Monument, honouring the famous explorer. As you traverse the stunning North York Moors, enjoy the blend of rugged landscapes and rolling countryside. End the day in the tranquil village of Great Ayton, where you’ll unwind and soak in the peaceful charm.

Day 6 - Sunday 11th May - Great Ayton to Whitby

Begin from Great Ayton through the countryside, passing charming villages and lush moorland as you make your way to Grosmont. For a shorter alternative, you can opt for a pleasant walk to Egton Bridge. Upon arrival in Whitby, a historic seaside town known for its Gothic Abbey and maritime heritage, settle in for a three-night stay. Enjoy the breathtaking coastal views and explore Whitby’s charming streets, with plenty of time to discover its rich history and vibrant atmosphere.

Day 7 - Monday 12th May - Rest Day in Whitby

Enjoy a well-deserved rest day in the charming coastal town of Whitby. Perhaps start by visiting the iconic Whitby Abbey, perched on a clifftop with sweeping views of the North Sea. Wander through the historic streets, explore the bustling harbor, or relax on the sandy beach. Indulge in fresh seafood at a local eatery, perhaps sampling Whitby’s famous fish and chips, or visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum to learn more about the town’s maritime heritage. Soak in the laid-back atmosphere and coastal beauty at your own pace.

Day 8 - Tuesday 13th May - Little Beck to Robin Hood's Bay

Set out on your final adventure, walking from the serene woodland of Little Beck to the picturesque Robin Hood’s Bay. The 11-mile route winds through scenic landscapes, quaint villages, and rolling hills, before opening up to breathtaking coastal views as you approach the North Sea. Upon reaching the charming fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay, take a moment to dip your feet in the sea, marking the completion of your coast-to-coast journey. Return to Whitby for a final evening.

Day 9 - Wednesday 14th May - Departure from York

After a relaxed final breakfast, you’ll leave the coast today and start the journey home. After a last look out at the North Sea you can reflect on having achieved your coast-to-coast walk across England. Your guides will then transfer you to Leeds Airport, where you will say goodbye. From here you can start your journey onward to home taking the memories of your adventure with you.

Your guide will meet you at Penrith Railway Station at 2:00 pm on the first day of your trip.
