This morning it’s time to hit the road and head north, to Belfast City. En route, your dive into Ireland’s history deepens as you stop at one of our most important megalithic sites, Brú na Boinne. The three main sites at Brú na Boinne, Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth hold the largest concentration of prehistoric megalithic art to be found anywhere in Europe. today you will explore Knowth, a large passage tomb surrounded by 17 smaller tombs.
Back on the road, the total drive time from Dublin to Belfast is roughly 2 hours which means you will be getting into the city late afternoon with plenty of time to see some sights before checking in. Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast in 1898 and grew up in family homes on Dundela Avenue and Circular Road in the east of the city. Visit some of the important sites connected with C.S. and his childhood in Belfast including C.S. Lewis Square, containing Narnia-inspired sculptures before retiring to your hotel for your first evening in Belfast.

Duncan will arrange with you the evening before as to your departure time this morning.
Leaving Belfast, our first stop this morning is with a local guide who will take you on a fascinating Emigrants Walk, following in the footsteps of Irish migrants as they escape the horrors of the Great Hunger and make their way to the new world. The walk is about 6km (3.7 miles) through the countryside which remains unchanged since famine times. We recommend you wear good waterproof footwear in case the ground is wet plus a waterproof jacket.
Following a wonderful local lunch, spend the afternoon exploring the Causeway coast including a visit to the famous Giants Causeway. Legend has it that an Irish giant named Finn McCool created a causeway to get across the Irish Sea to face his rival, the Scottish giant Benandonner. Derry City is the only remaining completely walled city in Ireland and one of the finest examples of Walled Cities in Europe. Built in the 17th century, the walls, approximately 1.5km in circumference, form a walkway around the inner city and provide a unique promenade with which to view the layout of the original town. Your private expert guide today will incorporate a t0ur of the walls with the tragic events of Jan 30th 1972 when a peaceful protest turned violent leading to the killing of 14 unarmed men and boys along with the injury of many others in an event known as Bloody Sunday into your guided experience.
After a delicious fish and chips lunch, you will meet a local weaver who learned his craft at the age of 16 and whose traditional hand loom methods date back centuries.

As Wilderness Ireland’s Head of Guides, I am fortunate to have found a profession that combines my appreciation for the natural environment and the fun of meeting like minded people.
For the last ten years working in the outdoors, hiking, biking and kayaking has enabled me to enjoy the experience of journeying yet at the same time providing constant opportunities to stop and take it all in.
Favourite Place to Play
West coast of Ireland – so many ways to experience it and a lifetime of places to visit. Connemara, Mayo, Galway and Clare are particular regions I love to explore!
