Day by Day

Day 1 - Monday 15th July - Welcome to Scotland

Your Wilderness Scotland journey begins with anticipation as you meet your guide this morning. Together, you’ll delve into history at Culloden Battlefield and Clava Cairns. Later, a visit to Johnstons of Elgin offers insight into Scotland’s textile heritage, followed by a leisurely afternoon tea. Transfer to the village of Kingussie and settle in before a delicious dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 2 - Tuesday 16th July - Hiking in the Cairngorms

Today, enjoy a hike in the beautiful Cairngorms National Park. At over 4500 sq km it is the largest National Park in the UK and with miles of winding rivers, make it Scotland’s most prolific whisky-making region. With your guide, choose a hike that suits you – perhaps head out onto the alpine plateau of the Cairngorms Mountain range and bag a sought-after Munro. Or choose to explore the Caledonian pine forest which is the oldest forest in Scotland and the last of the woodland that once covered the whole of the UK. Roam heather-covered glens and alongside jewel-like lochs for the perfect immersion into the ancient landscape.

Day 3 - Wednesday 17th July - Fly Fishing

Prepare for a day of tranquility and skill as you try your hand at fly fishing amidst the stunning surroundings of Rothiemurchus estate. Your experienced guide will lead you to prime fishing spots, where you can cast your line and reel in the catch of the day.

Day 4 - Thursday 18th July - Hiking and a visit to the Highland Folk Museum

After a leisurely breakfast, head out this morning for a scenic circular walk around Loch an Eilein followed by a visit to the Highland Folk Museum, a fantastic open-air exhibit that reveals how Highland folk lived many years ago. Visit the ruins of Ruthven Barracks (an impressive fortification built after the 1715 Jacobite uprising) before exploring Insh marshes which is home to curlew, lapwing, redshank and snipe. Enjoy another relaxing evening in your private apartments.

Day 5 - Friday 19th July - A Round of Golf

Tee off amidst the natural beauty of Boat of Garten Golf Club, known for it’s challenging course and stunning views of the Cairngorms. The course lies beside the River Spey and is lined by birch trees, heather and broom, maximising the natural landscape and producing a beautiful and challenging course. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or a novice, this round promises to be a memorable experience.

Day 6 - Saturday 20th July - Reindeer and Open Canoeing

Enjoy a truly unforgettable experience to day and join a guided hill walk with The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd, Britain’s only free-ranging herd of reindeer. These tame and friendly animals are a joy to all who come and see them. Later today head to the water to explore by open canoe on a beautiful loch surrounded by native forest. Under the expert tuition of your guide, you’ll practise different strokes and get comfortable before venturing out to explore the water and shoreline. Canoeing provides you with a unique opportunity to view this wild, mountainous corner of Scotland from a different perspective as well as the chance to spot wildlife.

Day 7 - Sunday 21st July - Into the Highlands

After breakfast, head out for a short but spectacular walk. The Uath Lochans, known locally as the Paw Print Lochans, are a hive of biodiversity. Raised boardwalks wind through reedy marshlands. Look out for a glimpse of the occasional frog and the glittering wings of dragonflies as they dart over the wetlands. Climbing a short way to Farleitter Crag, this small hill offers incredible elevated views of the water, forest and surrounding Cairngorm Mountains. Finish up in Aviemore or Inverness depending on your homeward travel plans, to conclude your adventure with Wilderness Scotland. Your guide will drop you off and you can continue your onward journey.
