Day 13 - Tuesday 28th May - Soho markets and antiques

Today, you’ll leave central London behind and venture to Walthamstow, northeast London, where very few tourists ever go.  The name comes from Wilcumstow – the place where people are welcome.  It’s a vibrant and multicultural neighbourhood and features food from across the world and London’s longest street market.  Your guide has lived here for 25 years so it’s a real insider tour and he knows everyone.  You might bump into Mick the Butcher, Venessa the priest, Laurence the pub owner or Michael the homeless guy.

A visit to Walthamstow is a study in gentrification.  Pockets of poverty live side by side with homes costing + £1 million.  The Village, which is the original Norman settlement, has experienced turbo-charged gentrification over the last 10 years.  Fancy restaurants and gift shops abound and residents predominantly work in the creative industries.  We will examine the challenges of gentrifications and the housing crisis; who wins and who loses?

The very urban landscape is punctuated with great street art and inspirational community gardening.  Walthamstow Village’s volunteer community gardening group has won many gold medals in Royal Horticultural Society competitions.  You will enjoy their street orchards, meadows, ponds and you’ll see where they keep their bees.  You will be gifted a jar of their delicious honey before we head back to Central London.

Your guide will arrange a meeting time with you the night before.

Day 14 - Wednesday 29th May - Final day of Explorations

You will head East to the City of London where the Romans founded our great city almost 2000 years ago.  Today, the City is our financial centre (The Wall Street of London) and the ruins of Roman London are now surrounded by gleaming skyscrapers by top architects such as Norman Foster and Richard Rogers.  The contrast between the new and the old is fascinating and the street-scape changes every time you turn a corner.  No wonder this part of London has featured in many films, including Harry Potter.

As you cross in to the East End, only yards from the glitz of the city, everything changes dramatically.  High rise gives way to low rise and the smell of curry fills the air in Banglatown, home to London’s Bangladeshi community.  Remnants of previous immigrants remain; the beautiful homes built by Hugonots 300 years ago and beigel shops founded by Jewish immigrants a hundred years ago.  Such a vibrant neighbourhood has attracted celebrities today and your guide will point out the homes and studios of well-known artisits and actors as you meander down the old streets of Spitalfields.  Our next stop will be another neighbourhood undergoing change; Kings Cross.  20 years ago the streets around the train station were rather intimidating with drug dealing and prostitution.  The transformation of Kings Cross kicked off with the arrival of the Eurostar train to Paris and Brussels.  The old industrial railway hinterland has been completely transformed and the result is pretty impressive.  Kings Cross is generally seen as one of the most successful urban transformations in London in recent history.

Your guide will arrange a meeting time with you the night before.

Emergency services:  999 or 112

NHS 24 (24 hour free medical advice):  111

Tipping Guidelines

For tipping our guides – We don’t generally recommend a set amount as tipping is not expected in the same way that it is in North America. However, similar North American travel companies generally suggest something along the lines of £10-30 per person per day for your guide, which is a wide range to choose from. Generally, we would encourage you to ask yourself what you were expecting from your guide, and then think about how they have exceeded those expectations and choose an amount you are comfortable with.

For local services such as restaurants again tipping is not expected but if you receive great service then 10-15% of the bill is normal.

Luggage Notes

Please note that we expect travellers to bring an average of One Large Holdall or Suitcase and up to Two smaller day-bags or hand-luggage sized pieces. If you expect to bring more than this then please let us know well in advance of arrival so that we can ensure there is capacity for this (additional charges will apply if separate luggage transfers are required).

Meet Your Guide

Jeremy Martin

Contact Number: 07717390103

My mum and dad were founding members of the “Rangiora Tramping Club” in New Zealand, so I grew up spending most of my weekends in the hills and valleys of Arthur’s Pass and other wild parts of New Zealand. At high school my mates and I taught ourselves to kayak by putting our boats in the school pool at lunch time and figuring it out.

Since then I’ve been working as a guide and instructor in New Zealand, Scotland, Turkey and other beautiful places.

Place to Play

Paddling in Torridon and Applecross; it’s an ancient yet dynamic place, wild yet familiar, windswept yet comforting.

Not a lot of people know this

My mum was a brownie leader, and I think I was Aberdeen’s first boy brownie. Also… when Robert the Bruce defeated the English at Bannockburn in 1314 the population of New Zealand was probably zero.
