Day by Day

Day 1 - Welcome to Edinburgh

Arrive in the architecturally stunning city of Edinburgh today and settle into your lovely accommodation. Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to head out and explore the winding alleys and cobblestone streets. Full of history, the capital is very accessible by foot. Wander up the Royal Mile, visiting St Giles’ Cathedral (which has been a working church for over 900 years) and Edinburgh Castle, which offers sweeping views over the city. This evening, enjoy dinner and a good night’s sleep.

Day 2 - Exploring Edinburgh and Foodie Tour

After breakfast, meet an expert Edinburgh guide in the foyer of your hotel and head out for a private walking tour of the city. Very accessible on foot, the capital brims with locally sourced culinary delights. As you stroll down cobblestone streets, chat with your guide about the intriguing history of the city, delving deep into the Scottish larder. After lunch, you then have a free afternoon to continue explorations at your own pace, pick up souvenirs or relax as you prefer.

Day 3 - Explore Edinburgh

You have a free day today to explore Edinburgh at your own pace. You may wish to set out to explore the historic capital. Stroll down to the Waters of Leith, meandering your way along the river to the beautiful Dean Village and looking out for the solitary statues that stand silently in the water. Pick up a fresh coffee and a buttery pastry from one of the many independent cafes as you browse the art galleries, booksellers and artisanal food shops. This evening, head out into the twinkling streets to dine at one of Edinburgh’s many award-winning restaurants.

Day 4 - Tales from a Local Storyteller

Meet your friendly Wilderness Scotland guide this morning, and set off for the west coast, and the mystical Glencoe valley. If you feel like stretching your legs there are plenty of options for short hikes en route, or after you arrive to get a chance to immerse yourself in the beauty of the area. As ethereal mists blow over rugged peaks, relax with a celebratory drink in a traditional climbers’ pub listening to the fascinating tales of the land from a local storyteller. A short transfer will take you to Fort William, where you can settle into your accommodation this evening.

Day 5 - Morning Walk & Afternoon Wildlife Boat Trip

Explore the atmospheric Glen Nevis at the foot of the tallest mountain in Scotland this morning. Walk along the dramatic gorge to reach the secluded but impressive Steall Falls. There is a notorious wire bridge crossing the water nearby, but most people are content to admire it rather than use it! Late afternoon take a boat trip across the water, keeping on the look out for local wildlife. Seals and seabirds are almost guaranteed, but you may be lucky enough to catch a sighting of an eagle or a cheeky otter too.

Day 6 - Journey on the Jacobite

Following a relaxing breakfast this morning,  step aboard the Jacobite Steam Train for a magical journey to the coast in the train that featured in the Harry Potter films. Puff your way through glorious mountain scenes and over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. Take some time to potter around the local shops in the small fishing village of Mallaig, or enjoy a coffee overlooking the water, before boarding again for the return journey back to Fort William.

Day 7 - Road to the Isles

Today you’ll travel along the stunning Road to the Isles. This is frequently listed as one of the most beautiful drives in the world and it is easy to see why. Admire the silver sand beaches of Arisaig and the views into the distance of Skye and the small isles. Your guide will share the tales of the local area as you go, making the landscape come alive with characters and events from the past. If time allows, you may wish to take a stroll on the white sand beaches of Arisaig and soak in the views of the Small Isles before continuing your journey. Catch the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale on the south of Skye. After your arrival, make your way to the capital of Skye, Portree, and settle in for a relaxing evening.

Day 8 - Wildlife and Raasay

Head out today to explore the coasts of Skye and Raasay on a Wildlife Seafari boat trip. Keep your eyes peeled for the likes of sea eagles, puffins, dolphins, seals, minke whales & basking sharks. You may wish to spend some time this afternoon exploring the village of Portree, or simply relax at the hotel with a good book, or enjoy a couple of local drams in the bar.

Day 9 - Dunvegan Castle & Skye Explorations

You will set out to explore Skye today. Visit Dunvegan Castle, and take some time to wander through the beautiful gardens. The castle is seat of the Clan McCleod and the only Highland fortress that has been occupied by the same family for 800 years. After departing, spend some time on Skye’s Northern Art Trail, visiting some of the nearby shops and galleries of local artists and craftsmen.

Day 10 - Private Photography on Skye

Head out with a qualified photographic guide for the day in search of the perfect shot with emphasis on seeking out the best locations across the island and helpful instruction. Skye is a photographer’s dream offering varied and dramatic landscapes. Enjoy some free time this afternoon to relax or explore at your own pace. Your guide, of course, will be available should you wish to head out.

Day 11 - Transfer to Fort Augustus

After a leisurely breakfast, leave Skye behind and make your way to the loch side village of Fort Augustus. Stop to explore Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most iconic and striking sights in all of Scotland, taking your time to appreciate the unique beauty of this remote and historical place. Settle into your accommodation this afternoon.

Day 12 - Lochs and Glens

Enjoy a boat trip across the mysterious waters of Loch Ness today, renowned for its elusive inhabitant, the legendary Loch Ness Monster. As the boat glides through the mist-kissed waters, you’ll be captivated by the stunning Highland scenery that surrounds you. Keep your eyes peeled for any signs of Nessie herself while soaking in the tranquility of the ancient loch. Following your time on the water you may wish to head to the breathtaking beauty of Glen Affric, often referred to as Scotland’s most beautiful glen. Immerse yourself in the lush greenery, majestic mountains, and serene lochs, feeling a deep connection with the wild Scottish landscape.

Day 13 - Visit Culloden Battlefield and Clava Cairns

After a relaxing breakfast, depart Fort Augustus and make the short transfer to Inverness. Visit Culloden Battlefield and its richly researched and engaging visitor centre. Learn about one of the most harrowing battles in Scottish history and walk across the rough moor where the Jacobites and the Government fought in 1746. Take the opportunity to visit Clava Cairns – a well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery complex of passage graves, ring cairns, kerb cairns and standing stones. After lunch, make the short journey south to the Cairngorms National Park, the largest National Park in the UK, and settle into your cosy highland accommodation.

Day 14 - The Uath Lochans

After breakfast, head out for a short but spectacular walk. The Uath Lochans, known locally as the Paw Print Lochans, are a hive of biodiversity. Raised boardwalks wind through reedy marshlands. Look out for a glimpse of the occasional frog and the glittering wings of dragonflies as they dart over the wetlands. Climbing a short way to Farleitter Crag, this small hill offers incredible elevated views of the water, forest and surrounding Cairngorm Mountains. On your way back to the guest house visit the ruins of Ruthven Barracks (an impressive fortification built after the 1715 Jacobite uprising) before exploring Insh marshes which is home to curlew, lapwing, redshank and snipe.

Day 15 - Strathspey Steam Railway

Enjoy a short walk round one of the most beautiful lochs in Scotland this morning, complete with a ruined island castle. A little later today, board the Strathspey Steam Railway and enjoy a scenic journey from Aviemore, through Boat of Garten, to Broomhill station. Enjoy a tasty afternoon tea whilst aboard, complete with freshly made sandwiches, home baked cakes and scones with local jam and cream, and tea or coffee.

Day 16 - Transfer to Ballater

Make your way to the east of the Cairngorms National Park today, to Ballater, which will be your base for the next couple of nights. Before arriving to your accommodation however, you’ll visit Castle Fraser, garden and estate, one of the largest tower houses in Scotland and parts of which date back to as early as 1450. Perhaps enjoy some refreshments in the tea room before making your way to Darroch Learg, your lovely accommodation for the evening.

Day 17 - Unique Foodie & Whisky Workshop

Set out into the whisky hills to a private remote kitchen this morning and spend a fascinating day in the home and kitchen of the charismatic writer, broadcaster and ‘food anthropologist’ Ghillie Basan. Set in an idyllic location you will discover a colourful and well stocked kitchen with inspiring views over the local hills. Ghillie will guide you in cooking a delicious feast (including local ingredients foraged from the surrounding hills) while you share stories and learn about the dishes you are creating.

Day 18 - Balmoral Castle and a Royal Lochnagar Distillery Tour

This morning, head out with your guide to the beautiful Balmoral Estate. A Highland residence of the Royal Family since it was bought for Queen Victoria in 1852. Visit Balmoral Castle and wander through the exquisite gardens. If time allows, you may fancy going for a mellow circular walk nearby. After lunch, enjoy a tour and tasting at the Royal Lochnagar Distillery, which was issued with a royal warrant by Queen Victoria in 1848. Learn about the history of Scotland’s most famous tipple while also having the chance to indulge in a tasting.

Day 19 - Transfer to Glasgow

After a scrumptious breakfast, begin your journey south to the hustle and bustle of Glasgow. After arriving safely at your accommodation, your guide will depart, leaving you with the afternoon for self guided explorations. You may wish to find a local pub with live music sessions, or sample some of the local cuisine at one of the many fantastic restaurants.

Day 20 - Glasgow - Self Guided Explorations

Today you have a full free day to continue explorations at your own pace and there is plenty to keep you discovering more. Maybe spend a relaxed few hours exploring the magnificent halls and collections of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, or visit the Modern Art Gallery. Whatever you choose, you are sure to be inspired.

Day 21 - Depart
