After breakfast head out for a day spent exploring the beautiful cobblestone streets of Edinburgh. Full of history, the capital is very accessible by foot. Wander up the Royal Mile, stopping to visit the architecturally stunning St Giles Cathedral, and enjoy panoramic views from Edinburgh Castle. Pick up a coffee and a pastry from one of the wee artisan shops, dipping into local galleries, cheesemongers and bookshops. If you fancy an afternoon with a twist, head to the Surgeons’ Hall Museums, which holds one of the largest collections of surgical pathology in the world. This evening enjoy dinner under the twinkling lights of the city.

Head to Edinburgh Station and collect your hire vehicle before travelling into the region of Perthshire, stop in the quaint town of Pitlochry for a stroll and perhaps head to the Historic viewpoint of Queens View for iconic panoramas over Loch Tummel. Following the river as you head north, you will find the town of Dalwhinnie, from this remote but accessible location, comes the liquid known as the gentle spirit. Take a peek at the ins and outs of the working distillery and discover its unique high location and its iconic malt with a Distillery tasting and tour before continuing to Inverness.

Leaving the city behind head East to Culloden Battlefield, the site of the last battle of the Jacobite rising in 1746. Here you can take a tour of the battlefield and the visitor centre before heading to the site of three Bronze Age burial chambers and standing stones known as Clava Cairns. This site is exceptionally well preserved and a great example of prehistoric history in Scotland dating back over 4,000 years. Delving further into the battle history of Scotland, walk the walls of Fort George, an impressive historic military fortification which took 22 years to build after the bloody battle of Culloden. Keep your eyes open for Dolphins as they are often spotted leaping in the waters here as you absorb the beauty of the rugged coastal region. On your return to Inverness, explore the city at your leisure or relax at your boutique hotel.
