Overview

A private hiking trip in Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park offers an unparalleled escape into rugged beauty, with its vast moorlands, towering peaks, and ancient pine forests. Starting in the Cairngorms, the trails weave through remote glens and alongside shimmering lochs, providing a sense of solitude and a chance to connect with nature. The journey continues to Applecross, where narrow winding roads reveal stunning coastal views and secluded mountains. You’ll experience dramatic landscapes, with the sea always within sight. Sea kayaking from Shieldaig you will glid through clear waters surrounded by dramatic coastal landscapes and the stunning backdrop of the Torridon mountains.

This trip through some of Scotland’s wildest regions promises an adventure filled with natural beauty, tranquility, and awe-inspiring scenery.

Day by Day

Day 1 - Saturday 24th May - Journey begins Cairngorms National Park

Your guide will meet you at Inverness or Aviemore train station where your adventures will begin. There are so many great walks in the Cairngorms that the itinerary remains flexible. One option is a hike close to the accommodation, a favourite among locals. This route ventures into the eastern edge of the Monadh Liath mountains on a circular path to Loch Gynack,  it’s a wild and beautiful place and a great start to your trip.

Day 2 - Sunday 25th May - Glen Feshie and Loch Insh

After breakfast we will head into Glen Feshie is widely considered one of the most beautiful glens in the Cairngorms, and as the estate undergoes an extensive rewilding programme, it is becoming even more picturesque. Today’s hike explores the lower reaches of the glen, passing through a beautiful mix of young trees and magnificent old pines. Following the banks of the dynamic River Feshie, the trail reaches a group of lochans hidden amongst the towering trees. Taking a hill path, the route leads to a stunning viewpoint overlooking the lochans and the mountains beyond. Descending back to the glen, there will be a chance to stop at a local boathouse café for refreshments and a moment to savour the views over the water.

Day 3 - Monday 26th May - Abernethy Forest and Wildlife Reserve

After a leisurely breakfast, we will head into the Abernethy Forest is considered by many to be the most beautiful in Scotland, with picturesque lochs surrounded by ancient Scots pine trees and framed by views of the high mountains. Enjoy a circular walk, perhaps incorporating a section of the Speyside Way long-distance trail, and during the summer months, conclude at a wildlife reserve where there is the hope of seeing red squirrels and numerous bird species.

Day 4 - Tuesday 27th May - West to Applecross and Torridon

This morning after breakfast we will begin the journey westward through some of Scotland’s most scenic routes. We will stop off for a beautiful riverside circular hike on the way where we will enjoy old stone bridges, expanses of woodland  as the river rushes alongside us. We will continue west where you will notice the scenery transitions into vast, open moorland, dotted with heather and rocky outcrops. As you approach Torridon, the imposing sandstone peaks of Liathach, Beinn Eighe, and Beinn Alligin rise steeply from the landscape, creating a breathtaking backdrop of jagged ridges and deep glens. Just around the corner nestled by the shore, Shieldaig is a picturesque village with whitewashed cottages and stunning views across the bay. The calm waters of the loch reflect the rugged hills, and Shieldaig Island adds to the village’s tranquil, scenic charm, making it a perfect stop in this remote corner of the Highlands and our home for the next three nights.

Day 5 - Wednesday 28th May - Sea Kayaking Loch Shieldaig followed by an afternoon hike

This morning after breakfast meet your expert sea-kayaking guide and head out into the tranquil waters, offering close encounters with local wildlife and breathtaking views of the rugged coastline, Shieldaig Island, and the towering peaks of the Torridon mountains. Enjoy viewing the rugged coastline unfold from a serene, water-level perspective.

Once back on shore, you will spend the afternoon with your guide enjoying a short hike in this stunning part of the west. This evening over dinner look out over the glimmering waters you were gliding through earlier today.

Day 6 - Thursday 29th May - Applecross Peninsula

After breakfast today we will head to The Applecross Peninsula. This area offers a variety of easy hiking options that showcase its stunning coastal and mountain landscapes. One option is along the coastal path from Applecross village to Toscaig, a gentle route that winds through peaceful crofting land with beautiful views over the sea to the Isle of Skye. Another option is exploring the Bealach na Bà viewpoint, the dramatic Bealach na Ba (sometimes written Bealach nam Bo) “The pass of the cattle” is the highest road pass in Scotland. You will return to your hotel invigorated by the sea air and breeze.

Day 7 - Friday 30th May - Transfer to Inverness and depart

After our final breakfast overlooking Shieldaig Island we will head to Torridon and enjoy a final hike around the shoreline taking in the breathtaking scenery all around. We will then begin happily meandering our way back towards Inverness. Bid farewell to your guide, who will drop you at the train station, where your trip will conclude.
