Number of Travellers:  4
Duration: 7 Days / 6 Nights

Overview

On this adventure to Scotland’s wildest islands, you will enjoy superb hiking to the peaks of Lewis and Harris, the most rugged of all the Outer Hebridean islands. The hills of the Outer Hebrides punch well above the weight that their diminutive height would otherwise suggest. These remote and heather-clad hills are full of character. They offer the keen hill enthusiast wild and rocky vistas and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife such as golden eagles and red deer roaming free.

Highlights

  • Enjoy hiking off path on wild hikes among the Hebridean hills, surrounded by sea and sky. A jewel in the crown of Scotland walking tours.
  • Witness stunning vistas of the Hebridean Islands with their unique mix of green hills, white sand beaches and blue waters.
  • Enjoy a rib boat trip to explore lagoons and search for Sea Eagles.

The peak of Mealaisbhal may be low at 576m, but it is a hill of great beauty, offering lots of bare rock and a tremendous viewpoint from which to view the island. We first ascend to the shoulder of Mula Mac Sgiathain which gives us great views across the Uig Sands before gaining the rocky upper slopes of the hill. We boulder hop a little to the summit and drink in the views before descending to the West.

Our hike today starts from the Gearrannan Blackhouse village on Lewis. The village will provide an insight into the traditional dwellings of the islands and how island life used to be. From here we set out west onto the rugged headland to make a circuit enjoying the wild terrain of sea cliffs and rocky outcrops. After hiking out to the small lighthouse at the end of the peninsula, we then return along the other side of the headland.

Day 5 - Friday 12th July - Harris Distillery Visit followed by Seatrek

This morning is quite a leisurely start with a visit to the wonderful Harris distillery where you will find out about the two spirits that are produced in this wonderful part of the island. Afterwards your guide will take your northwards to a small jetty at Miavaig, in Uig. You will then head out on a rib towards Loch Roag and past the village of Reef entering Little Loch Roag to look for otters, often seen foraging on the shoreline. Sea Eagles frequently patrol this area and we regularly spot them when we do this trip. Magnificent birds of prey, larger and darker than golden eagles. They are also known as White Tailed Sea Eagles.  From there we head for the sweeping length of Traigh na Berie towards the island of Siaram, then on to Pabbay Mor. We slow down to explore the amazing depths of the sea-caves and continue round the North end of Pabbay to see its impressive natural arch and spectacular Lagoon surrounded by sandy beaches.

Here we drink in our final Hebridean High Point before descending to the incredible Luskentyre sands to walk barefoot along the Atlantic shore.

Mini Bio

I have a real love for all things outdoors in Scotland and am always amazed by the wealth of opportunities that are out there. Whether I’m on the trail mountain biking, out sea kayaking or heading to the hills on a trip, every day is different. The trick is to just stop for long enough to take it all in.

I feel fortunate to be able to constantly explore Scotland and have chosen to live in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. I have nature on the doorstep but I can also be almost anywhere in the Highlands within a couple of hours from home, it’s a treat! While I’ve bounced around Scotland for most of the last 25 years I have also been lucky enough to run trips all over the world. Perhaps because of these experiences I’ve come to realize that we really have got it all right here.

Place to Play

Harris and Lewis always take a lot of beating as far as I’m concerned, perfect in the summer sun or a winter storm. There’s always an activity that complements the season perfectly…

Not a lot of people know this

For 18 months of my life my favourite neighbours by far were a 5,000 strong Rock Hopper Penguin colony.
