Day by Day

Day 1 - Welcome to Edinburgh

Arrive in Edinburgh today and check in to your lovely hotel. After relieving yourself of your luggage and taking some time to relax after your journey, head out onto the cobbled streets. Edinburgh is a very walkable city, which makes exploring on foot easy. Depending on how much time you have, perhaps wander up the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle, admiring the stunning architecture as you go. You may also like to make the short stroll up Calton Hill which gives excellent views of many of the city’s famous landmarks, including Arthur’s Seat, the Scott Monument and the Firth of Forth. This evening, enjoy dinner at your hotel before a good night’s sleep.

Day 2 - Old Town and New Town

After a relaxed breakfast, head out to explore at your own pace. With many places to see, this is sure to be a lovely day. You may like to visit Grassmarket, which is tucked in the heart of the historic old town and is one of the most pretty and lively areas of the city. Enjoy walking around, perhaps picking up a coffee and a pastry from one of the wee artisan shops and dipping into local galleries, cheesemongers and bookshops. If you fancy an afternoon away from the hustle and bustle, head to the Surgeons’ Hall Museums, which holds one of the largest collections of surgical pathology in the world – definitely not an art gallery! Or to Leith to explore the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Day 3 - Relaxed Morning & North to Aviemore

This morning, you may like to visit Edinburgh Botanical Gardens, which is home to an incredible number of plant species from around the world and offers peaceful walks through curated gardens and greenhouses. From the Botanics, take a stroll along George Street, which is one of New Town’s main streets and offers many shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. After lunch, head to Waverley Train Station (the only station in the world to be named after a novel) and catch a train north to Aviemore, a small town tucked in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. Settle into your cosy accommodation this evening, ahead of your Highland adventure tomorrow.

Day 4 - Highland Folk Museum & Distillery Tour

After breakfast, meet your Wilderness guide and visit the Highland Folk Museum in the nearby village of Newtonmore. This mile-long open-air township has an extensive collection of historic buildings and exhibits that showcase traditional rural life in the Highlands dating back to the 1700s. After exploring the museum, head to a charming post office cafe for a lunch of locally sourced produce. This afternoon head out for a tour and tasting at a new, innovatively built distillery with a turf roof that looks out over the River Spey. Enjoy chatting with an expert distiller and sampling a number of whisky expressions that emulate the character of future whiskies to come.

Day 5 - Visit Culloden Battlefield and Clava Cairns

This morning, rise early to travel to the Isle of Skye. A very scenic drive, make your way through landscapes that shimmer with dark water and where hardy sheep graze amongst bracken, heather and golden grasses. Along the way, visit Culloden Battlefield and its richly researched and engaging visitor centre. Learn more about one of the most important battles in Scottish history and walk across the fields where the Jacobites and the Government fought in 1746. Before you go, take the opportunity to visit Clava Cairns – a well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery complex of passage graves, ring cairns, kerb cairns and standing stones. Arrive on Skye this afternoon and settle into your hotel in the colourful town of Portree.

Day 6 - Dunvegan Castle & Talisker Distillery

This morning, ribbon your way through Skye’s enchanting landscapes to visit Dunvegan Castle, a Hebridean fortress which has been home to the same family for over 800 years. Learn about the family ancestry and stroll around the formal gardens, perhaps pausing for home bakeing and cup of tea, all the while admiring the sweeping views of the islands, mountains and sun-clipped shores. This afternoon, enjoy a tour and tasting at Talisker Distillery Afterwards, you may like to take a walk along Talisker’s black sandy beach or return to your hotel and relax before dinner.

Day 7 - Glenfinnan Viaduct & Arrive in Glencoe

Leave the shores of Skye behind this morning and travel back to the mainland towards Glencoe. As well as being an incredibly scenic route, your journey today will  take you past the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct found at the northern shore of Loch Shiel. Built in the 1890s by ‘Concrete Bob’ McAlpine, the viaduct’s many arches were constructed using pioneering technology at the time and are set against a commanding mountainous backdrop. After a good stretch of the legs, hop back in with your guide and continue inland to the spectacular Glencoe and your hotel for the night.

Day 8 - Hiking in Glencoe

Have breakfast this morning while looking out onto the rugged, wild landscape. Then, join your guide for a beautiful short hike exploring Scotland’s most iconic glen. Depending on what you fancy, there are many options for excellent walks in the area, so chat with your guide about what suits you both best. One great option today is to hike along a narrow rowan-hung gorge until you reach the Lost Valley, a hidden meadow once used to hide rustled cattle. After your walk, stop by the thoughtful Glencoe Visitor Centre to learn more about the harrowing history of the glen, as well as interesting facts about the geology of the area.

Day 9 - Doune Castle & Return to Edinburgh

Leave the Highlands behind this morning and relax on the scenic drive from Glencoe to Edinburgh. Pass through the stunning Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and pause to visit Balquhidder Parish Church—the final resting place of the Scottish outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor. Another great place to stop along the road is Doune Castle, a 14th-century courtyard castle that is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Scotland. With a striking gatehouse and a labyrinth of rooms connected by narrow doorways, it’s a brilliant and evocative place to explore. Back in Edinburgh this evening your guide will leave you and you can relax at your hotel with a delicious dinner.
