Stroll through the graceful streets of the New Town, where neoclassical architecture meets creative flair, and discover stylish boutiques, galleries and artisan shops tucked into handsome crescents. Or wander into Princes Street Gardens, a peaceful green ribbon separating old and new, and pause beneath the shadow of the castle to take it all in. One option is to follow the cobbled spine of the Royal Mile as you make your way downhill to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Arthur’s Seat, the palace is a working royal residence with a rich past and was once home to Mary Queen of Scots. In the flickering light, your guide will reveal tales of the hidden spaces beneath the Old Town, offering a spine-tingling glimpse into Edinburgh’s darker past.

In the afternoon, explore ancient life on the water at the Scottish Crannog Centre, where immersive displays bring the Iron Age vividly to life. Then follow the loch’s edge to the peaceful Fortingall Church, home to one of Europe’s oldest trees — a gnarled yew thought to be over 5,000 years old.
