Day 1 - Friday 9th May - Welcome to Edinburgh

Arrive in the architecturally stunning city of Edinburgh today and settle into your lovely accommodation. The Airlink 100 express bus runs frequently and takes around 30 minutes to reach central stops. Alternatively, the tram service offers a smooth ride into the heart of the city, with departures every few minutes and a journey time of around 35 minutes. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also readily available, with the drive typically taking about 25 minutes, depending on traffic.
Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to head out and start exploring the winding alleys and cobblestone streets. Day 2 - Saturday 10th May - Edinburgh Castle & Folk Session

Enjoy a self-guided day exploring the vibrant and historic city of Edinburgh. Compact and easily navigated on foot, the capital offers a wonderful mix of grand architecture, hidden alleyways, and sweeping views. Your destination is the mighty Edinburgh Castle, perched high on Castle Rock. Take your time discovering the rich history within its ancient walls. Visit St Margaret’s Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, marvel at the Honours of Scotland — the Scottish Crown Jewels — and step inside the atmospheric dungeons and the soldiers’ barracks. Be sure to make your way to the battlements before 1 o’clock to witness the traditional firing of the One O’Clock Gun, a daily ritual dating back to 1861. After soaking up the history of the castle, enjoy a leisurely afternoon wandering through the Old Town’s narrow closes and perhaps pausing for lunch in a cosy café or traditional pub. Later today, prepare to see a different side of the city as you meet your guide for an underground walking tour. Descend beneath the streets into hidden vaults and abandoned closes, where your ghoulish guide will regale you with eerie tales and stories from Edinburgh’s darker past — a fascinating and slightly spooky experience that offers a unique glimpse into the city’s layered history. This evening, round off your day with a special visit to the Scottish Whisky Experience. Here, you’ll enjoy an immersive evening learning about Scotland’s national drink, complete with a whisky tasting and a celebratory dinner. Day 4 - Monday 12th May - Singing Sands & Distillery Tour

Start your day with a refreshing walk to the beautiful Singing Sands beach, one of Islay’s hidden gems. Nestled in a sheltered bay, this secluded stretch of white sand is famous for the unusual phenomenon where the sand appears to “sing” or squeak underfoot as you walk across it. Take your time here, soaking up the peaceful atmosphere, listening to the gentle lap of the waves, and watching the ferries glide into nearby Port Ellen Harbour. Keep an eye out for a variety of seabirds — from oystercatchers and curlews to gannets diving for fish offshore — as the coastline here is a haven for birdlife.
With nine working distilleries scattered across the island’s rugged landscape, it’s little wonder that Islay is affectionately known as the ‘Whisky Island. So later today, we’ll head to Lagavulin Distillery for a memorable whisky experience. Learn about the island’s centuries-old distilling traditions, discover how the rich peaty flavours are created, and enjoy a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the art of whisky making. Of course, no visit would be complete without sampling a dram or two, savouring the distinct smoky, maritime character that Islay whiskies are celebrated for.
Return to your hotel this evening to unwind. Settle in with a good book or simply gaze out across the ever-changing scene of waves, sea, and sky — the perfect end to a day rich in island charm and simple pleasures.

Overnight: Port Ellen | The Machrie, Islay
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 5 - Tuesday 13th May - Kilchoman and to Loch Melfort

This morning, head to Kilchoman for a bracing, salty stroll along the sweeping sands of Machir Bay. Framed by rolling dunes and backed by rugged hills, this wild Atlantic beach offers a dramatic and invigorating start to your day. As you walk, take time to appreciate the rich natural life that thrives here — delicate pink purslane nestling among the grasses, marsh helleborine orchids blooming in the wetter pockets of land, and, overhead, the thrilling sight of peregrine falcons and merlins as they wheel and dive through the open skies. Afterwards, make your way to the nearby Kilchoman parish church and graveyard, a peaceful and atmospheric place that holds deep ancestral significance for you and your family. Take a moment to wander among the weathered headstones and reflect on the generations who lived and loved on this windswept isle, forging a strong connection between past and present. If time allows, you may also wish to continue with a walk to the American Monument on the Mull of Oa. Erected in memory of the lives lost when two troop ships sank off Islay’s coast during World War I, this striking memorial stands atop dramatic sea cliffs, offering breathtaking views and a poignant reminder of the island’s links to wider world events. Later this afternoon, catch the ferry back to the mainland, sailing across the Firth of Lorn with the soft light of late day on the water. On arrival, travel to your charming accommodation at Loch Melfort, a beautiful and tranquil spot where you can relax and settle in before dinner, with the sound of the sea and views across the bay to keep you company.

Overnight: By Oban | Loch Melfort Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 6 - Wednesday 14th May - Kilmartin Glen

This morning, journey to the historically rich area of Kilmartin Glen, often referred to as one of the most important prehistoric landscapes in Scotland. Begin your visit at the excellent Kilmartin Museum, where engaging exhibits bring to life the story of the glen’s ancient past. Explore artefacts unearthed from the surrounding area, from Bronze Age tools to early Christian relics, and gain a deeper understanding of the people who lived here thousands of years ago. Following your museum visit, head out on a walk through the glen itself, where history feels remarkably close. Wander among ancient standing stones, enigmatic stone circles, and weathered burial cairns, each with its own story to tell. After a relaxed lunch nearby, continue your journey back through time with a climb to the summit of Dunadd Fort. This Iron Age hill fort, dating back more than two millennia, was later used as the ceremonial seat of the ancient Gaelic Kings. It is said that kings were crowned here, their feet fitting into the carved footprint still visible in the stone today. Take in the sweeping views across the surrounding landscape and imagine the power and prestige this place once commanded.Later this afternoon, return to Loch Melfort for some well-earned relaxation. You might choose to wander through the beautifully maintained gardens, filled with rare plants and stunning views over the Sound of Jura. Alternatively, you could take inspiration from the landscape and paint, or simply unwind with a good book as you savour the peaceful atmosphere of this special corner of Scotland.

Overnight: By Oban | Loch Melfort Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 7 - Thursday 15th May - To Glencoe

This morning, board the small passenger ferry for the short and scenic crossing to the Isle of Kerrera, a tranquil island just off the coast near Oban. Stepping ashore feels like stepping back in time — there are no cars here, just quiet tracks, green fields, and the sound of the sea. Set out on foot to explore, making your way to the evocative ruins of Gylen Castle. Perched dramatically on a rocky promontory overlooking the Sound of Kerrera, this 16th-century tower house has an atmospheric, almost otherworldly presence. You may wish to linger here, taking time to sketch, paint, or simply absorb the timeless beauty of the scene. If you feel like stretching your legs further, continue on a circular walk around the island. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at the island’s charming tea shop — a perfect spot to relax, refuel, and perhaps sample some homemade cakes — before taking the ferry back to the mainland. From here, travel north towards Glencoe, one of Scotland’s most spectacular and storied landscapes. En route, pause for a photo stop at Castle Stalker, a striking medieval tower house set on a small tidal islet on Loch Laich. Its iconic, fairytale-like silhouette has inspired many artists and is sure to stir your own creative spirit. Arriving in Glencoe, you’ll find yourself immersed in one of Scotland’s most breathtaking natural settings. This dramatic glen, shaped by glaciers and steeped in history, is beloved for its wild, haunting beauty. Settle into your welcoming hotel, where you can relax with a drink while taking in the sweeping mountain views. As the evening falls, you might find yourself sharing the landscape with some of the local stags that often roam nearby — a truly memorable encounter to end your day.

Overnight: Glencoe | Kingshouse Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 8 - Friday 16th May - Hiking Glencoe

Today is yours to embrace the wild beauty of Glencoe, hiking in the company of your experienced guide. There are many wonderful walks to choose from, each offering a different perspective on this legendary landscape. You might venture into the Lost Valley (Coire Gabhail), a hidden hanging valley tucked high among the hills, once used by the MacDonald clan to conceal their rustled cattle. The walk offers a sense of seclusion and mystery, with towering cliffs rising on either side and a real feeling of stepping into another world. Alternatively, for those seeking a more vigorous outing, consider tackling one of the Paps of Glencoe — steep, rugged hills that offer fantastic panoramic views across the glen and surrounding mountains. For the adventurous, there’s also the option to push further into the high hills, following in the footsteps of mountaineers and climbers drawn to these dramatic landscapes for generations. If a quieter day appeals, you might choose instead to spend a relaxed afternoon at the hotel, with time to read, sketch, or paint. Set up your easel or find a comfortable spot with a view of Buachaille Etive Mòr — the Great Herdsman of Etive — whose iconic pyramid shape stands sentinel at the head of the glen. It’s a scene that has inspired countless artists and photographers, and with the ever-changing light playing across the mountainsides, no two views are ever quite the same. Later this evening, head to a traditional climbers’ pub, a warm and welcoming place rich in local character. Share stories over a well-earned drink and, if you’re lucky, enjoy some live music — an authentic taste of Highland hospitality to end your day.

Overnight: Glencoe | Kingshouse Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 9 - Saturday 17th May - Return to Edinburgh

After a hearty breakfast, begin your day with a visit to the Glencoe Visitor Centre. Here, you’ll have the chance to learn more about the dramatic history, geology, and culture of the glen — from its ancient volcanic origins to the tragic events of the Glencoe Massacre. Take a short, gentle walk to see the reconstructed turf house, a faithful representation of the traditional dwellings that once sheltered Highland families, offering a vivid glimpse into daily life in centuries past. After your visit, bid farewell to Glencoe’s towering peaks as you transfer south toward Edinburgh. Along the way, enjoy a stop in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park — a stunning landscape of shimmering lochs, wooded hills, and rugged mountains. Stretch your legs with a scenic walk, breathing in the fresh Highland air one last time and soaking up the beauty of this beloved national park. Continuing onward, you’ll arrive back in Scotland’s central belt and head to your airport hotel. Here, your guide will say goodbye, leaving you to settle in and relax. Having had the most extraordinary good fortune and privilege to travel on adventures and lead expeditions to all seven continents, allowing me to become more familiar with the Khumbu Valley in Nepal than the Lairig Ghru in the Cairngorms, I am still as passionate as ever to share my enthusiasm for my home country, Scotland.

Whether travelling on skis or snowboard; by kayak, canoe, raft, boat or windsurfer; shod in rock-shoes or snow-shoes or equipped with ice axe and crampons – whether out on my own, with friends, or leading and teaching others, I am still often not able to tell the difference between days of work or play.
