Day 7 - Sunday 15th June - Exploring Skye
Begin the day with a visit to Dunvegan Castle, Scotland’s oldest continuously inhabited castle, home to the MacLeod clan for over 800 years. Set on the edge of Loch Dunvegan, this fairy-tale fortress is surrounded by lush gardens and dramatic coastal scenery. Inside, explore a treasure trove of clan artifacts, including portraits, weapons, and the legendary Fairy Flag—a sacred MacLeod relic said to have been gifted by the fairies themselves. According to legend, unfurling the tattered silk banner in battle would bring victory to the clan, a belief so strong that it was carried into multiple historic conflicts. Step into the Great Hall, where generations of clan chiefs have ruled, and wander through rooms filled with antique furnishings, rare books, and Jacobite relics that tell the story of Skye’s noble past. After exploring the castle, take time to drive through Skye’s winding roads, where breathtaking views unfold at every turn. Along the way, stop to browse the island’s many independent art galleries and craft studios, where local artists capture Skye’s ever-changing light and rugged beauty. Whether it’s a landscape painting, handwoven textiles, or pottery inspired by the sea, these hidden gems offer a perfect chance to take home a unique piece of the island. For a truly local experience, visit Skye Skyns, where you can see traditional sheepskin processing in action. Watch as expert craftsmen transform locally sourced fleeces into beautifully soft rugs and garments, using time-honored methods. The workshop offers an insight into Skye’s deep connection to the land and its heritage of sustainable craftsmanship. Continue your scenic drive to see more of Skye’s breathtaking landscapes, take a detour to some of the island’s most iconic sights. Stop at the Old Man of Storr, a towering rock pinnacle set against the dramatic backdrop of the Trotternish Ridge, where a short but rewarding hike offers unparalleled views over Skye’s rugged coastline. Further along, visit Kilt Rock, where sheer basalt cliffs rise from the sea, resembling the pleats of a kilt, and witness Mealt Falls plunging 60 meters into the Atlantic below. For the ultimate scenic adventure, drive through the Quiraing, a surreal, landslip-formed landscape of towering cliffs, jagged pinnacles, and hidden plateaus—one of the most photographed and otherworldly places in Scotland.
