Day 3 - Wednesday 11th June - Rosslyn Chapel & Drumlanrig Castle

Collect your hire car and head south toward Rosslyn Chapel, one of Scotland’s most enigmatic sites. Built in the 15th century by Sir William St Clair, this exquisite chapel is renowned for its intricate and mysterious stone carvings, which have sparked centuries of speculation. Among the most famous is the Apprentice Pillar, a masterpiece of medieval craftsmanship with a compelling legend—said to have been carved by an apprentice who was tragically killed by his jealous master. The chapel’s ornate interior features carvings depicting biblical stories, pagan symbols, and figures that some believe hint at connections to the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail, adding to its aura of intrigue. Continue south visit Drumlanrig Castle, an opulent Renaissance-style palace with a rich and dramatic history. Completed in 1689 by William Douglas, the 1st Duke of Queensberry, the castle is an architectural marvel, constructed from distinctive pink sandstone and featuring grand staircases, ornate plasterwork ceilings, and lavish period interiors. Inside, explore its remarkable art collection, alongside fine antique furniture and elaborate Flemish tapestries. Drumlanrig’s history includes a touch of modern day drama—in 2003, a daring art theft saw a group of thieves steal Leonardo da Vinci’s “Madonna of the Yarnwinder” from the castle’s walls. Fortunately, the painting was recovered in 2007, but the event only adds to the castle’s fascinating past. Today, visitors can still admire an authentic Rembrandt painting, a true highlight of the collection. Day 9 - Tuesday 17th June - Eilean Donan Castle, Culloden & Clava Cairns

Leave Skye behind and cross back to the mainland, where your first stop is Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic and photogenic fortresses. Set on a small tidal island at the meeting of sea-lochs, its dramatic location has made it a favourite among artists and filmmakers. The castle, originally built in the 13th century as a stronghold for Clan Mackenzie, played a key role in defending the Highlands against Viking invasions. Later, it became embroiled in clan feuds and Jacobite uprisings before being destroyed by government forces in 1719. Left in ruins for nearly 200 years, it was lovingly restored in the early 20th century, bringing its Great Hall, bedrooms, and kitchens back to life. From here, continue along to the shores of Loch Ness, the legendary home of Scotland’s most elusive creature. Pause at Urquhart Castle, a ruined stronghold that has witnessed centuries of conflict. Once a strategic medieval fortress, it changed hands many times between the Scots and the English during the Wars of Independence. Now, its dramatic ruins, perched on the water’s edge, offer stunning views across the vast, deep waters of Loch Ness—a perfect spot to scan for the famous monster. Arriving into Inverness you’ll visit Culloden Battlefield, the site of the last battle ever fought on British soil. On April 16, 1746, the Jacobite army, exhausted and outnumbered, faced the government forces of the Duke of Cumberland. In less than an hour, the dream of restoring the Stuarts to the throne was crushed, and the brutal aftermath saw the systematic destruction of Highland culture. Walk among the weathered memorial stones, marking the mass graves of the fallen clans, and feel the weight of history in the winds that sweep across the moor. Just a short drive away lies Clava Cairns, a 4,000-year-old burial site, shrouded in mystery. This collection of ancient chambered tombs and standing stones is believed to have been a place of ritual and remembrance for prehistoric people. The alignment of the stones suggests a connection to the winter solstice, and the site has become famous in recent years for inspiring the Outlander series’ time-traveling stones. Walking among the moss-covered cairns and lichen-speckled monoliths, you’ll sense the deep connection between Scotland’s ancient past and its enduring legends. As the day draws to a close, journey into the Cairngorms National Park, where rolling heather-clad hills and dense pine forests create a landscape of rugged tranquility. Settle into your accommodation this evening surrounded by the wild beauty of the Highlands.

Set on a mile-long site in the heart of the Cairngorms, this open-air museum offers a glimpse into centuries of Highland life, from crofting communities to the rise of industry. The highlight is the recreated 1700s Highland township, where costumed interpreters demonstrate traditional skills like weaving, blacksmithing, and peat-cutting. Wander through thatched cottages, their interiors furnished as they would have been centuries ago, and step inside a smoke-filled longhouse, where families once gathered around an open fire. As you explore, you’ll gain insight into the harsh but deeply rooted way of life that defined the Highland clans before the Clearances reshaped the region. Later, board the Strathspey Railway, a restored vintage steam train that journeys through the rolling landscapes of the Spey Valley. Settle into your elegant carriage, where the rhythmic chug of the locomotive and the billowing steam curling into the sky transport you to a bygone era of rail travel. As you pass through heather-covered hills, dense pine forests, and wide-open farmland, enjoy a classic afternoon tea of delicate sandwiches, warm scones, and fine Scottish shortbread. The distant peaks of the Cairngorms provide a breathtaking backdrop, making this a relaxing and nostalgic way to soak in the timeless beauty of the Highlands.

Day 11 - Thursday 19th June - Farewell to the Highlands

Today, you’ll have a relaxed breakfast, savouring the tranquil atmosphere of the Cairngorms before beginning your journey back to Edinburgh. If you wish, take a short morning walk, breathing in the fresh Highland air and soaking in the last moments of this wild and beautiful landscape. Whether it’s a gentle stroll through ancient pine forests, a walk along a riverbank, or simply stepping outside to admire the morning light over the hills, this is the perfect way to begin the day before returning to Scotland’s capital. Your first stop is at the House of Bruar, often referred to as the Harrods of the Highlands. This luxurious country shopping destination is known for its finely curated Scottish goods, from cashmere and tweed clothing to handcrafted homewares, artisan gifts, and fine food. Next, arrive at a private Highland estate, where you’ll be welcomed by the estate owners, who will personally guide you through their historic home and working estate. After meeting the estate animals, jump into a Land Rover and set off on an off-road adventure into the hills, traveling deep into the estate’s untamed landscape. Your journey will take you through rolling heather-clad moorland, past remote glens, and alongside sparkling lochs, with plenty of opportunities to spot red deer, golden eagles, and other native wildlife. Far from the beaten path, you’ll arrive at a remote mountain bothy, a traditional Highland shelter, set in complete solitude among the dramatic hills and open skies. Here, enjoy a luxury picnic lunch, thoughtfully prepared with the best of Scottish produce, from fresh seafood and smoked meats to fine cheeses and homemade delicacies. As you dine in this spectacular wilderness, surrounded by nothing but mountains and the sounds of nature, take in the incredible sense of remoteness and serenity that defines the Highlands. After lunch begin the last leg of your journey back to Edinburgh. As you arrive in Scotland’s vibrant capital for your final night, take time to soak in the city’s energy once more. Drop off your hire car and then perhaps enjoy a stroll through the illuminated Old Town, sip a cocktail in a historic bar, or indulge in a memorable farewell dinner at one of Edinburgh’s renowned restaurants, reflecting on your extraordinary journey through Scotland’s landscapes, history, and culture.
