Day by Day

Day 1 - Saturday 17th August - Welcome to Scotland

Arrive in Edinburgh and meet your guide, who will be with you throughout your trip. Enjoy lunch in the city before transferring north into the West Highlands. Pass through captivating landscapes which will become wilder and more dramatic. Have the chance to stop en route, for photo opportunities of the magnificent nature that surrounds you, before reaching your Castle retreat to rest for the evening.

Day 2 - Sunday 18th August - Hike the West Highlands

Your guide will meet you at your hotel this morning to lead you on a hike through the stunning scenery. Perhaps transfer to Glen Nevis, to hike through what is among the Highlands’ most impressive glens. Herds of shaggy Highland cattle graze the valley floor and a sparkling river runs through glades of trees. Hike to a gorge that opens up to a hanging valley and Steall Falls; this is Scotland’s second highest waterfall, with a single drop of 390 feet. There are plenty of route options to suit every level of energy and challenge, this will be discussed with your guide the night prior.

Day 3 - Monday 19th August - Scottish Loch Tales & History

This morning step on board for a cruise of the dark waters of the infamous Loch Ness. Look out for wildlife such as feral goats, golden eagles and of course the elusive monster! The ruins of Castle Urquhart, come into view to admire as we travel further up the loch. This large castle has a rich and bloody past that dates back centuries. It was eventually destroyed by government troops so it could no longer be used as a stronghold by local clans. Once back on dry land drive the lochside road to visit the Castle with your guide to explore further into the history. Later, have the option to hike part of the Great Glen Way, along the side of the Caledonian Canal.

Day 4 - Tuesday 20th August - Travel to the Cairngorms

This morning your guide will transfer you through the mountains to reach the highland village of Braemar. Situated in the Cairngorms, this is a quaint village with plenty of character, surrounded by hills and moorlands. Depending on energy levels, enjoy a short hike en route, or simply relax as you journey to your destination. (Approximately 3/3.5 hours drive time.)

Day 5 - Wednesday 21st August - Day of Hiking

Enjoy a full day hiking today, exploring the hills and rivers of the beautiful Deeside area with your expert guide. The day will be tailored to your preference, with lots of options to choose from, the day can be leisurely or challenging to suit the whole family.

Day 6 - Thursday 22nd August - Local Farm and Castle Visit

Today visit a local Cattle Farm to meet some gorgeous Highland Cows. Explore the farm, meet the animals and learn about life as a farmer in Scotland, as well as sampling the fresh produce. After lunch, travel to the east coast to the 13th century cliff-top fortress, Dunnottar Castle. The castle is said to have inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and offers panoramic views of the Aberdeenshire coast. Afterwards, we wind our way through the countryside, arriving back to the Fife Arms for the evening.

Day 7 - Friday 23rd August - Hiking and Distillery Tour

This morning, head out with your guide for a stunning hike on one of the beautiful nearby trails. Walk through the ancient Caledonian pine forests, listening for the white-water rush of a river and the bright sing-song call of a blackbird. Whether you fancy a mellow circular walk or a more demanding hike, your guide will be able to suggest the perfect option for you.  Later, enjoy a private tour and tasting at the Royal Lochnagar Distillery, which was issued with a royal warrant by Queen Victoria in 1848. Learn about the history of Scotland’s most famous tipple while also having the chance to indulge in a tasting, for those who are old enough.The rest of the day is free for you to make the most of your final night in the Highlands.

Day 8 - Saturday 24th August - Exploring Edinburgh

Leave the highlands behind and travel south to the city of Edinburgh. Meet up with an expert city guide providing you insight into the tales and history of this charming city, taking in the atmosphere and delights of the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Discover the true character of the Old Town and some of the lesser known sites. Tour the labyrinth of cobbled alleyways contrasted with Georgian townhouses and more modern architecture of this captivating city. Perhaps attend a show or two, or engage in the festival’s street performances that catch your eye as you walk the royal mile. This evening make the most of your final night in Scotland.

Day 9 - Sunday 25th August - Depart Edinburgh
