Young Scottish Adventure – Skye and the Highlands

July 2024

Duration: 7 Days / 6 Nights

Day by Day

Day 1 - Welcome to Scotland

Meet your friendly Wilderness Scotland guide in Inverness this morning before heading out to visit Culloden Battlefield and its richly researched and engaging visitor centre. Learn about one of the most harrowing battles in Scottish history and walk across the rough moor where the Jacobites and the Government fought in 1746. Take the opportunity to visit Clava Cairns – a well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery complex of passage graves, ring cairns, kerb cairns and standing stones. After lunch, make your way north to the spectacular Torridon area and settle into your cosy Highland accommodation this evening and relax.

Overnight: Torridon | The Stables
Room Type: Stables Double
Meals Included: Lunch

Day 2 - Hiking in Torridon

Chat with your guide to discuss options for today’s walk in the Torridon or Applecross area. Your guide will help you select a suitable hike, choosing from coastal or mountain walks, and keeping in mind the weather and your experience. Applecross is a sleepy and idyllic part of the Highlands, surrounded by stunning mountain and coastal scenery. Torridon has a different character altogether, being surrounded by bold, towering peaks, separated by spectacular glens with a real sense of wilderness. Both are wonderful areas to explore on foot so this is a great way to start your adventure.

Overnight: Torridon | The Stables
Room Type: Stables Double
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 3 - Exploring the Misty Isle

This morning head west towards the iconic Isle of Skye. This afternoon, visit Dunvegan Castle, a Hebridean fortress which has been home to the same family for over 800 years. Learn about the family ancestry and stroll around the formal gardens, perhaps pausing for a home bake and cup of tea, all the while admiring the stunning views. If time allows you may also wish to go for a short hike before settling in to your accommodation in the capital town of Portree.

Overnight: Portree | Marmalade Hotel
Room Type: Superior Double
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 4 - Hiking on Skye

Head out and enjoy some of the best hiking on Skye today. Your guide will chat through options with you and decide the best option depending on what you feel like doing. You may wish to head out to explore the dramatic landscape of the Quiraing. As you walk admire the stark rock formations that rise from the rugged ground like great ruined battlements. Alternatively, hike along the coast and past the ruins of two villages abandoned during the Highland Clearances. Chat with your guide about this incredibly dark time in Scottish history as you explore the mossy walls of the old houses. As the soft breeze carries the smell of salt and sunshine across the heather, follow the rocky shore below cliffs that lurch towards the sea. Gradually ascend above the white-flecked waves, listening to the raucous call of seabirds, before returning to your hotel to relax.

Overnight: Portree | Marmalade Hotel
Room Type: Superior Double
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 5 - Wild Loch Coruisk & The Black Cuillin Mountains

Feeling rested, head south with your guide, arriving in Elgol – a tiny hamlet scattered along the western cliffs of the Strathaird peninsula. From a small jetty, board the charming Bella Jane and sail over Loch Scavaig into the very heart of the Black Cuillin. As the lovely first mate provides some fascinating history about the surrounding islands, look for sleepy seals lounging on the warm rocks. Upon reaching the shore, leave the boat to explore Loch Coruisk, also known as the Cauldron of the Waters, a deep dark loch that stretches like a shadow below the impressive volcanic peaks. Choose to walk around the loch or climb the rugged mountain of Sgurr na Stri – which is considered by many to offer one of the wildest and most spectacular views in Scotland.

Overnight: Portree | Marmalade Hotel
Room Type: Superior Double
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 6 - Exploring Raasay

As the morning mist recedes across the water, catch a small ferry to the quiet and geologically diverse Isle of Raasay. Often overlooked, this peaceful island offers much to explore. From the distinctive, rugged peak of Dùn Caan to coastal circuits on swathes of golden sand – there’s a myriad of engaging walks to choose from. Keep an eye out for wildlife, perhaps spotting the soaring silhouette of a white-tailed eagle, known in Gaelic as iolaire sùil na grèineas – the eagle with the sunlit eye. Return to mainland Skye later this afternoon and transfer to your second accommodation of the trip.

Overnight: Portree | Marmalade Hotel
Room Type: Superior Double

Day 7 - Return to Inverness

After a leisurely breakfast, begin your journey back to Inverness. Finish up in Inverness, where your guide will drop you at your accommodation and depart after a magical week exploring some of the best the Highlands and Islands of Scotland have to offer.
