Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 - To the Castle

Arriving in Glasgow Airport’s private terminal, the transfer south to Glenapp Castle is around 2 hours by road. If time permits, indulge in some culture or history to break the journey. Our favourite options include a walking tour of Glasgow with a focus on street art; or a visit to Dumfries House, a stately home owned by Prince Charles, for a fascinating tour of the house and to explore the ornate gardens. Of course, it’s possible to helicopter directly to Glenapp Castle if you prefer. Settle into your suite and look forward to a tasting menu in its award-winning restaurant.

Overnight: 5 star | Glenapp Castle Hotel | South-west Scotland

Day 2 - Galloway and the Southwest

After breakfast, a short transfer takes us to the Rhinns of Galloway. We take a short hike above sea cliffs to reach a lighthouse which sits proud above the Mull of Galloway, the most southerly point in Scotland. Looking across the sea, Ireland is a mere 13 miles away and easily visible on a clear day. Afterwards, enjoy lunch in an award-winning restaurant on the coast, drinking in the stunning sea views. In the afternoon, return to the castle to relax in its indulgent surroundings, or perhaps head out for a round of golf – there are many courses, famous and otherwise, on this coastline.

For guests who prefer a more energetic day, ask us about the fantastic road cycling, mountain biking and challenging hikes in this area.

Overnight: 5 star | Glenapp Castle Hotel | South-west Scotland

Day 3 - Hebridean Sea Safari

We leave the splendour of Glenapp Castle behind and head to sea on a privately-chartered zodiac to explore the Hebridean Islands. Travelling between islands, your clients will spot bountiful sea and bird life, and can venture ashore to the site of an ancient monastery, archaeological site, hidden castle garden or whisky distillery. The journey will be tailored to your clients interests, making it unique to them. Late afternoon, we arrive on a small Hebridean island, where the Glenapp concierge team will have the luxury camp ready for us. Enjoy a well-deserved hot shower and a ‘dram’ on the shore, before your private chef prepares a memorable dinner. You may be used to 5 stars but tonight, dining under the night sky, you can have them all.

As a unique extra, we can arrange for a sea eagle to join you on board the zodiac for the first part of the journey! ‘Ripley’ has been trained to catch fish while flying from the boat – an incredible thing to see and experience.

Overnight: Luxury private camp | Isle of Jura

Day 4 - Islay: Scotland's Whisky Island

After breakfast by the beach you will, reluctantly, leave the camp behind and jump back onto the zodiac for a short crossing to the Queen of the Hebrides, the Isle of Islay. With eight whisky distilleries and a population of just over 3,000 residents, it is little wonder Islay is known as Scotland’s whisky island. We’ll tailor your day for you, as always. Explore the huge sandy beaches, hike to the American Monument or play a round of golf at the impeccable Machrie Links. Being home to famous whiskies such as Ardbeg, Lagavuillin and Laphroig, as well as The Botanist gin, we expect you may want to include some spirit in your day! A range of intriguing experiences and behind-the-scenes-tours can be arranged. Afterwards, end the day on a high with a scenic helicopter flight from Islay directly to our next destination, a castle hotel tucked beneath the flanks of Scotland’s highest mountain.

Overnight: 5 star | Inverlochy Castle Hotel | Fort William.

Day 5 - Steam Trains and Wild Coastlines

The day begins with a steam train ride which is one of the greatest rail journeys in the world, passing mountain scenery and shimmering lochs following the route of the ‘Road To The Isles.’ Arriving at the coast, explore the fabulous beaches with your guide – perfect for a wild swim if you feel brave! Alternatively, try sea kayaking with seals or follow in the footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie as you explore the various historic sites in this region, meeting a local storyteller along the way.

Overnight: 5 star | Inverlochy Castle Hotel | Fort William

Day 6 - Cairngorms National Park & Loch Ness

A morning drive east takes us to the magnificent Cairngorms National Park. Home to Scotland’s highest mountains and the ancient Caledonian Scots Pine forest, it’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature. Take an off-road Land Rover Safari with a local ghillie, exploring the forest and learning how a traditional Highland Estate operates. Then hike into the woods for a private yoga session amidst the pines. Alternatively, enjoy a private tour of Scotland’s quirkiest gin distillery or master your Spey cast with an afternoon’s fishing. A short transfer north takes us to Loch Ness and the glorious setting of Aldourie Castle. After drinks in the library, enjoy a gourmet BBQ on the patio overlooking Loch Ness.

Overnight: 5 star exclusive-use | Aldourie Castle | Loch Ness

Day 7 - Furthest North

After breakfast, you’re joined for a morning coffee by Scotland’s foremost expert on Loch Ness. Arriving in Scotland in the 1970s determined to find the monster, he is now an authority on the loch and its unique ecosystem. Afterwards, complete your south-to-north journey through Scotland on a memorable 100-mile helicopter flight to the north coast. Our destination is Dunnet Head, a small promontory above a sweeping sandy beach with views north (of course!) to the Orkney Isles. Returning to the castle late afternoon, walk the grounds before a final night celebration, with dinner in the Grand Hall, followed by traditional folk music and dancing.

For guests who prefer to spend more time exploring locally, we highly recommend a day trip to nearby Glen Affric, thought by many to be the most beautiful valley in Scotland. It offers outstanding hiking, as well as cycling and canoeing. For guests with an interest in history and culture, the region surrounding Aldourie offers much intrigue with battlefields, ancient monuments and historic castles. As ever, each day will be customised for your clients. An extended stay at Aldourie is highly recommended.

Overnight: 5 star exclusive-use | Aldourie Castle | Loch Ness

Day 8 - Depart

After a leisurely breakfast, a transfer of just 20 minutes takes you to the private terminal at Inverness Airport. Alternatively, charter a helicopter to an airport of your choice to begin your journey home.
